Zhang Xiaogang (1958) - Family Portrait of the Chinese People 2002

This impressive portrait of the Chinese artist Zhang Xiaogang stems from the 2002 portfolio “Family Portrait of the Chinese People.” Colored digital print Bottom right signed by the artist in Chinese characters Bottom left numbered in pencil. About the work The composition shows a front-facing portrait of a young person wearing a dark cap and an almost expressionless face. The large, dark eyes gaze directly at the viewer, while the softly blurred facial features create a peculiar distance. This interplay of a photographically inspired portrayal, restrained color, and unusual color accents is characteristic of Zhang Xiaogang’s distinctive portraiture. ZHAN For Zhang Xiaogang, family is not only a private community but also a symbol of social and cultural connections. As the artist himself explains, we all live in a large family of sorts, where different familial, social, and cultural “blood ties” determine our coexistence. In doing so, Zhang Xiaogang also draws on the tradition of Chinese portrait and folk painting, whose roots extend back to the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republican era. Editor: Kwai Po Collection Hong Kong. Framing: The work is professionally and high-quality framed in an exclusive Swiss hand-made Plexiglas showcase. Plexiglas showcase dimensions: approx. 48 x 39 cm. About the artist: Zhang Xiaogang (born 1958 in Kunming, China) is one of the best-known and most important representatives of contemporary Chinese art. He studied at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and developed an autonomous figurative visual language in which personal memories and recent Chinese history are closely intertwined. He gained international prominence especially through his famous portrait series “Bloodline – Big Family,” which since the 1990s has become one of the best-known bodies of work in Chinese contemporary art. In his images, often inspired by old black-and-white photographs, Zhang Xiaogang examines the relationship between the individual and society, between familial connectedness and collective identity. The predominantly pale, almost mask-like faces of his figures convey a peculiar mix of familiarity, distance, and melancholy. His works have been shown internationally in major museums and exhibitions and have significantly contributed to the global recognition of contemporary Chinese art.
