Yozo Hamaguchi (1909-2000) was a Japanese printmaker of international renown, world-famous for reinventing and popularizing the technique of colored black-line printing in the 20th century. Born into a family of traditional soy sauce producers, he quickly left his art studies in Tokyo to settle in Paris in 1930, where he learned various engraving techniques before being forced to return to Japan during World War II. Returning to the French capital in 1953, he refined his art by managing to print colored plates through the careful overlay of several copper plates. His works, characterized by poetic minimalism, often depict simple subjects suspended in time, such as fruits, insects, or everyday objects. Placed against dark, velvety backgrounds with an infinite depth, his motifs seem to radiate a mysterious and subtle inner light. Recognized by his peers, he received prestigious prizes at the São Paulo and Venice Biennales, thus solidifying his status as a master of modern printmaking. After living and working for many years in San Francisco, he permanently returned to Japan at the end of his life, where a museum is dedicated to him in Tokyo today. His artistic legacy continues to influence printmakers worldwide thanks to his absolute technical mastery and his unique aesthetic sensibility that fuses East and West.
