YENA HEAD Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Washkuk Mountains, Nukuma / Kwoma People 20th century Terracotta and pigments Mounted on a pedestal by Christian de Beaumont, Paris H. 18 cm – W. 10 cm Provenance: - Edmonson Boylan, Galleries Primitif, Cairns, Australia - Acquired from Galerie Meyer, circa 1990, no. 1160 The Kwoma and the Nukuma are the two subgroups of the Washkuk Mountains population. Kwoma refers to the people of the mountains, while Nukuma refers to those of the lowlands and, therefore, of the water. Yena, Minja, and Nowkwi are the three ceremonies associated with the yam, the staple food. Yena, the first rite, corresponds to the yam harvest. Minja is associated with the growth of the yam, and Nowkwi symbolizes the fertility of the yam gardens and their continuity.
