Tektites (from the Greek tektos, fused) are natural glass objects formed by the impact of large meteorites on the Earth's surface. Tektites are among the driest minerals known, with an average water content of 0.005%. This is very rare, since most of the craters where tektites formed were underwater before the impact. Zircon partially fused has also been found inside some tektites. This, along with the water content, suggests that tektites formed under very high temperatures and pressures (similar to what is needed to form diamond). Indochinites like those in this batch were formed by the impact of a large meteorite about 800,000 years ago, according to the most recent studies. The collision was brutal, to such an extent that molten material covered 10% of the Earth's surface, with indochinites even found in Antarctica.
