World's Largest Gastropod Shell - 565 mm! - Syrinx...

A monumental specimen measuring 565 mm, with extraordinary visual impact — This imposing specimen of Syrinx aruanus, originating from Indonesia, presents itself as one of the most spectacular and iconic marine shells. With an exceptional length of 565 mm, this "Australian trumpet" possesses a monumental presence, making it a highly fascinating choice for natural history collections, elite malacological collections, sophisticated Wunderkammern and prestigious interior decoration projects. It belongs to the family Turbinellidae and is universally recognized as the largest living gastropod with a shell. Its rarity is heightened by the fact that it is the only species currently assigned to the genus Syrinx, giving it an additional level of collectible and scientific interest. The distribution of Syrinx aruanus includes the tropical regions of eastern Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and northern Australia. The shell morphology is unmistakable and extraordinarily elegant. A broad and bulky central body extends upward through an elevated and stepped spire, while at the lower part it extends into an extraordinary siphonal canal, narrow and tapering. This fusiform architecture creates a slim and dynamic silhouette, in which the mass of the main whorl is perfectly balanced by the two elongated ends, culminating in a sculptural effect of great balance and harmony. The whorls of the spire are separated by deep sutures and are emphasized by sturdy spiral keels that follow its profile. The surface is traversed by numerous growth lines and fine concentric cords, evidence of the progressive deposition of new material along the edge of the shell during the animal's life. Observed up close, these elements form a complex and fascinating texture, in which regular bands alternate with slight undulations and natural irregularities, giving the shell a texture rich in details and history. In nature, the color of the shell is protected by a thick organic periostracum, a brown or grayish surface coating. Once devoid of this covering, as in this magnificent specimen, the shell reveals a warm and luminous palette, with tones ranging from pale cream to delicate orange, particularly evident inside the opening, making it a decorative object of great value. This 565 mm specimen constitutes a centerpiece for any collection devoted to large tropical shells, Indo-Pacific gastropods, or the Turbinellidae family. As an ornamental shell, Syrinx aruanus has the visual impact of a true natural sculpture and can be the focal point of a space, displayed vertically to accentuate the slender development, or horizontally to highlight the orange aperture and the depth of the shell. This specimen is in excellent condition, considering its nature and size, showing only the light and natural imperfections typical of a sea shell of these proportions. The small fractures or surface irregularities are to be considered part of its natural formation and do not diminish its magnificence. An exceptional piece that unites malacology, natural history and decoration, making nature art for collectors and design enthusiasts. **Final Technical Data:** Name: Syrinx aruanus Classification: Marine gastropod Species: Syrinx aruanus Origin: Indonesia Dimensions: 565 x 263 x 213 mm Weight: 3593 g Material: Natural shell Conditions: Good Lot Code: RUA-456 SYA-47
