WINTJIYA (WINNIE) NAPALTJARRI Pintupi language, 1930 - 2014 Untitled, 2007 acrylic on linen 91.5 x 46 cm bears inscription verso: Wintjiya Napaltjarri, WN0704059, 91x46 cm, Papunya Tula Artists PROVENANCE Papunya Tula Artists, Northern Territory, Cat No. WN0704059 Private Collection, Victoria Wintjiya (Winnie) Napaltjarri was a senior Pintupi artist whose paintings express her deep cultural knowledge and connection to Country around Kintore in the Western Desert. Born at Mulparingya, northeast of Kintore, she was among the pioneering women of the Papunya Tula Artists movement, beginning her painting career in the early 1990s alongside her mother Mitjili Napurrula and sister, Tjunkiya Napaltjarri. Wintjiya developed a distinctive visual language characterised by bold compositions, rhythmic markings and a restrained yet powerful palette. Her paintings frequently depict designs associated with waturnuma (flying ant eggs) and nyimparra (women's hair-string skirts), reflecting women's ceremonial practices and ancestral knowledge. In this work, light peach and intense red tones create a striking composition, with the interplay of colour and repeated markings conveying the energy and significance of the artist's Country. The painting reflects Wintjiya's confident approach to colour and form, transforming traditional designs into a highly individual contemporary expression. Wintjiya's work is represented in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales and National Gallery of Victoria. © WINTJIYA NAPALTJARRI / Copyright Agency, 2026
