Winter Landscape with Skaters Niederländisch

This exquisitely executed oil painting on wooden panel is entirely in the tradition of the famous winter scenes by the Brueghel dynasty and Hendrick Avercamp. Against a wintry backdrop of a village and river, a richly detailed panorama of everyday life in wintertime Holland during the Golden Age unfolds. The composition captivates with its atmospheric sense of depth beneath a low-hanging, silver-grey cloudy sky. Numerous figures, characterised by sharp brushstrokes, bring the frozen water to life: townspeople in elegant dark clothing stroll along the bank, whilst in the centre, exuberant ice-skaters, sledge riders and children at play fill the ice. Elaborately rendered, bare trees in the foreground, together with a stone arched bridge, masterfully structure the pictorial space. The work is characterised by a subtle modulation of colour, featuring earthy brown tones and cool shades that perfectly convey the biting cold of winter. | 15.-18. Jahrhundert | Gemälde | Nummer: 26x1613 | Provenance: Privatsammlung, Nordrhein-Westfalen (seit mehreren Generationen in Familienbesitz).
