Toutes les enchères / Autres / William Alfred Gibson (1866-1931), Attributed to - River in a Landscape

Attractive landscape attributed to the Scottish painter William Alfred Gibson (Glasgow, 19 September 1866 – Glasgow, 6 January 1931). Although catalogued as attributed, the work is in all likelihood by his hand and displays the characteristic qualities of his mature style. Gibson was a Glasgow-based landscape painter working in oil and watercolour. Largely self-taught (with only a short period of instruction under a pupil of Corot), he was strongly influenced by the Dutch Golden Age masters and the Barbizon School, especially Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He served with the Royal Glasgow Queen’s Yeomanry / 6th Battalion Scottish Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War before devoting himself fully to painting. A lifelong member of the Glasgow Art Club, he exhibited regularly at the Glasgow Institute, the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and abroad. He worked in Scotland, England, Holland and France, favouring quiet river views, woodland scenes and tranquil rural subjects rendered with subtle colour harmonies and a muted palette of silvery greys, greens and browns. His paintings are held in numerous British public collections, including Glasgow Museums, the Hunterian (University of Glasgow), Aberdeen Art Gallery, Paisley Museum and Art Galleries, The Dick Institute (Kilmarnock), the McLean Museum & Art Gallery (Greenock) and the Ferens Art Gallery. Dimensions Painting: 36 × 27 cm Framed: 53 × 43 cm Condition The canvas has been relined. The work is an attractive and characteristic example of Gibson’s atmospheric landscape style. A fine piece by this Glasgow painter, whose subtle tonal landscapes continue to appeal to collectors of late 19th- and early 20th-century Scottish art.
