Henry Wilkinson & Co. – Silver-Plated Revolving Dome Chafing Dish / Hot Water Serving Dish – Sheffield, England – Early 20th Century (ca. 1900–1930) An elegant and complete silver-plated revolving chafing dish by the renowned English silversmith Henry Wilkinson & Co. of Sheffield, England. Raised on four beautifully cast cabriole legs with graceful side handles and finished with a refined beaded border, this impressive serving piece perfectly illustrates the quality and craftsmanship for which Sheffield silver plate became internationally celebrated during the early twentieth century. Designed as a hot water serving dish (bain-marie), the outer vessel is filled with hot water, allowing the removable inner serving bowl to keep food warm gently without direct heat. The pierced warming insert ensures an even distribution of warmth, while the elegant revolving dome lid allows guests to serve themselves easily while retaining heat. Such luxurious serving dishes were widely used during formal dinners, festive banquets and in prestigious hotels and country houses throughout the Edwardian period and the early decades of the twentieth century. The underside is stamped with the maker's mark HW & Co within a shield, together with the firm's distinctive crossed keys trademark, EP (Electro Plated) and production numbers, identifying the piece as the work of Henry Wilkinson & Co., Sheffield. Founded in 1843, the company became one of Sheffield's respected manufacturers of high-quality silver-plated tableware, admired for its elegant designs and excellent craftsmanship.
