One of Only Two Notes Recorded on this Elusive Hill County Bank Whitney, Texas. $5 1929 Ty. 1. Fr. 1800-1. First NB. Charter #13649. PCGS Banknote Choice Fine 15. Organized in 1932, the First National Bank in Whitney (Charter# 13649) may seem to be your typical rural Texas-based National Bank. Rare without any hint of doubt, bidders are nonetheless presented here with a rarity among rarities owing to the fact that the National Bank Note Census records just two notes overall. Even more remarkable at least in numismatic terms is the fact that this institution is conspicuously absent from the Rowe-Barr collection curated by Southern Methodist University and the enigmatic Philpott-Moody holdings while the most recent auction appearance can be traced to 2014 when this note's sole counterpart "A000023A" realized almost $2,600 by the time bidding had ended. Yet between recent realizations for comparable charters in recent years to the uncommon interest that recently followed many Texas Nationals issued under the Series of 1929, bidders have much to be thankful for even before the final bid is placed on this remarkable entry from the Jack Copeland Currency Collection. Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500. Provenance: From the Jack Copeland Currency Collection, Part IV. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
