Western Asia Minor or Thraco-Macedonian, uncertain mint Obol Ca. 600-550 BC

An extremely rare and apparently unpublished issue, with no exact parallels located in the auction archives searched. The cited comparisons differ in denomination or reverse design, leaving this particular type seemingly unrecorded. Western Asia Minor or Thraco-Macedonian, uncertain mint. Ca. 600-550 BC. Obol (Silver, 7 mm, 0.51 g). Obv: Corinthian helmet right. Rev: Quadripartite incuse square. Reference: Unpublished in any reference. Cf. Nomos, Obolos 43, 378 (Tetartemorion), Leu 11, 850 (amphora on reverse). Nomos 9, 70 (Thraco-Macedonian, Hemidrachm). Naumann 111, 421 (Tetartemorion). Extremely rare. Traditionally assigned to Skione in Macedon, this series now remains of uncertain origin. An Ionian mint has been proposed, while the attribution of a related hemiobol to Neandria in Troas in SNG Arikantürk offers another plausible possibility. The reverse, with alternating raised and sunken quarters, also finds parallels in Thracian coinage, notably at Chersonesos, leaving its geographical attribution open to debate.
