A German, dated 1920. Double-sided ceremonial association banner, silk with embroidered decoration, metallic thread, and gilt fringe. A distinguished Bavarian veterans’ and warriors’ association banner belonging to the Veteranen- u. Krieger-Verein Thüngersheim (Veterans’ and Warriors’ Association of Thüngersheim), a community in Lower Franconia, Bavaria. Particularly noteworthy is the banner’s 1920 date of manufacture, placing it firmly in the early Weimar Republic, while its imagery deliberately preserves the heraldic and monarchist traditions of the former Kingdom of Bavaria. The Landesseite, or state side, is centered by a finely executed embroidered Royal Bavarian Coat of Arms. The celebrated blue-and-white lozenges of the Wittelsbach shield are supported by two imposing golden lions and surmounted by the Bavarian royal crown. An oak and laurel branch extends alongside the arms, tied with a dark decorative ribbon, creating an elegant combination of royal, military, and commemorative symbolism. The reverse, or Vereinsseite, bears the embroidered inscription: "Veteranen- u. Krieger-Verein Thüngersheim" "Veterans’ and Warriors’ Association Thungersheim.".Rendered in elaborate flowing gold script, the inscription is surrounded by four prominently embroidered dates: 1820, 1849, 1866, and 1920. The dates appear to represent significant milestones in the history and military traditions of the association and its community. 1820 is particularly important, apparently marking the beginning of the association’s claimed historical lineage or that of an earlier local military or veterans’ organization. 1849 recalls the revolutionary disturbances of that year in the German states, during which Bavarian forces participated in military operations against revolutionary movements. 1866 refers to the Austro-Prussian War, in which the Kingdom of Bavaria fought alongside Austria against Prussia and its allies. The final date, 1920, identifies the period in which the present banner was produced. This dating makes the piece especially interesting historically: the banner was created only shortly after the collapse of the Bavarian monarchy in 1918, the end of the German Empire, and the establishment of the republican political order. Despite this dramatic political transformation, the association chose to retain the Royal Bavarian Coat of Arms as the principal emblem of the banner, emphasizing continuity with Bavaria’s royal and military past. From a White Plains, NY estate. Dimensions: flag measures approx. 50" x 59". Condition: Overall condition consistent with age, use, and period. The banner displays extensive creasing and wrinkling, general fading and discoloration, surface soiling, and scattered areas of wear. The silk ground has scattered pulls, snags, abrasions, and areas of weakness, with minor holes, splits, tears, and losses noted to the fabric and along some edges and seams. The embroidered, painted, and metallic decoration exhibits rubbing, wear, tarnishing/oxidation, and localized losses. The gilt fringe is worn and uneven, with areas of fraying, tangling, and loss. Additional minor condition issues may be present and are not necessarily visible in the accompanying photographs. Examination in person is recommended. Condition:, A German, dated 1920.
