Vintage Brooch with Sapphires & Diamonds in Gold & Silver, c. 1985

Jewellery in the form of celestial bodies enjoyed great popularity in the last third of the 19th century. Moons, stars and suns adorned the corsages of dresses and sparkled in the hair. Who doesn't immediately think of the legendary portrait of Sisi, painted by Winterhalter, which shows the young empress with a multitude of such jewels in her dark hair? The ladies of the time wore these brooches in combination with various other pieces at the neckline of their magnificent dresses. Many of the moons were decorated exclusively with diamonds to create a certain colorful closeness to the natural model. But more colorful designs were also created, often with several rows of precious gemstones. Diamonds were usually combined with sapphires or rubies. This brooch is a late echo of this 19th century moon fashion, as the gemstone cuts show that it was created more recently. We date it to the mid-1980s. The brooch is made of yellow gold with a silver overlay and set with approximately one carat of diamonds and 0.42 carats of blue sapphires. A shimmering pearl is suspended from a crescent-shaped pendant. The color of the brooch is reminiscent of the night sky, its shape of the long tradition of moon jewelry - making the brooch both modern and yet full of nostalgia.
