Despite his short and turbulent life, which ended in 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, he left behind an impressive and extensive body of work characterized by intense color, emotional depth, and expressive brushwork. Van Gogh inspired many generations of artists and decisively shaped the development of modern art. Van Gogh's artistic training began relatively late. After an unsuccessful career as a art dealer and preacher, he decided in 1880 to devote himself to painting. His early works, created mainly in the Netherlands, show the influence of Jean-François Millet and the Hague School, whose works were characterized by social realism and a dark color palette. In this phase, works such as "The Potato Eaters" (1885) emerged, depicting the harsh life of peasants in somber tones. A turning point in van Gogh's artistic development was his move to Paris in 1886, where he came into contact with the works of the Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists. Artists like Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Georges Seurat had a major influence on van Gogh's use of color and light. The vivid colors and short, bold brushstrokes favored by the Impressionists inspired him to a brighter and bolder palette. In Paris, van Gogh also met Paul Gauguin, whose works impressed him deeply. Gauguin's symbolic and expressive use of color and form profoundly influenced van Gogh. This connection later led to a brief but intense collaboration in Arles, in the south of France, where van Gogh created some of his most famous works, including "The Bedroom in Arles" (1888) and "Starry Night" (1889). Gauguin's influence is evident in the intense color and the simplified, symbolic depiction of motifs. Van Gogh's time in Arles was also shaped by his engagement with Japanese art. The influence of Japanese woodcuts, especially the works of Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige, is evident in van Gogh's clear lines and flat blocks of color. His series of flowering orchards and the painting "Blossoming Plum Tree" (after Hiroshige) show this influence clearly. Van Gogh's unique style, marked by emotional intensity and expressive brushwork, inspired many 20th-century artists. German Expressionism, represented by artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Emil Nolde, shows clear parallels to van Gogh's work. The vibrant colors and distorted forms used by the expressionists reflect van Gogh's influence. Fauvism, another important art movement that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, was strongly inspired by van Gogh. Artists like Henri Matisse and André Derain adopted van Gogh's bold color and his preference for simple yet expressive forms. The Fauvists used color as a primary means of expression, similar to van Gogh, to convey emotions and moods. Even the Abstract Expressionists in the USA, particularly artists such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, were influenced by van Gogh. Pollock's dynamic, gestural painting and de Kooning's powerful brushstrokes and expressive forms show a similar approach to painting as van Gogh's works. Both artists valued the emotional power and the physical presence of color that van Gogh embodied in his paintings. In the modern art scene, van Gogh's influence remains tangible. Artists like David Hockney and Anselm Kiefer have cited van Gogh as an inspiration for their own work. Hockney's bright colors and landscape representations show a clear parallel to van Gogh's style, while Kiefer's often dark and richly textured works reflect a deeper engagement with the emotional intensity of van Gogh's painting. Van Gogh's influence can also be found in Pop Art and Street Art. Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, two central figures of Pop Art, created works that quote and reinterpret van Gogh's iconic images. Warhol's serial repetitions and Basquiat's expressive, often chaotic visual language demonstrate how versatile van Gogh's legacy can be interpreted.
