Villeroy & Boch Mettlach – groot Art Deco dienblad – Spritzdekor met berken

Villeroy & Boch Mettlach – large Art Deco tray – Spritzdekor with birch trees, sailing boat and village – Germany – c. 1929–1935 A particularly atmospheric and large Art Deco tray, attributed to Villeroy & Boch Mettlach, with a beautiful ceramic plate in monochrome blue-gray tones. The stylized landscape with white birch trees, calm water, a sailing boat and a small village with a church tower is a fine example of German Spritzdekor from the interwar period. The central scene has an almost graphic look. On the left stand tall white birch trees against a darker foliage, while on the right a sailing boat glides over the still water. On the horizon lies a small village with a distinctive church tower. Clouds, reflections in the water and subtle gray-blue color transitions give the whole composition surprisingly much depth. This manner of decoration closely aligns with Spritzdekor, where ceramics were decorated with sprayed color and stencils. This technique experienced a boom in Germany, especially in the late 1920s and 1930s. For the Villeroy & Boch factory in Mettlach, the use of Spritzdekor is documented from about 1929 to after 1935. Particularly convincing is that another documented Villeroy & Boch tray from Mettlach has almost the same composition type: birch trees along a lake, a sailing boat and a village with a church tower, also executed as Art Deco Spritzdekor. That piece is dated to the period 1920–1930. The ceramic plate of this piece bears on the underside the green number 4499 and, in addition, an impressed numeral/letter code. Such numbers were used in ceramics for, among other things, mold and decoration identifications. Since a full factory stamp on the shown underside is not visible, the attribution to Villeroy & Boch is made based on the decoration, technique, execution and the strong similarity to documented specimens. Around the ceramic plate sits a handsome metal frame with an openwork gallery edge of regular vertical slits. On both sides there are large elegant handles. The tray rests on four small metal feet on the underside. Villeroy & Boch has a long history in Mettlach: Jean François Boch bought the former abbey there in 1809 and established a ceramic factory. The historic abbey is still connected to the headquarters and the ceramic collection of Villeroy & Boch today.
