View of Biederstein Castle Franz Xaver Nachtmann

Like a scene from a fairy-tale idyll, Biederstein Castle once stood amidst a lush, flowering garden landscape on the edge of the English Garden in Munich. Franz Xaver Nachtmann captured this site—which no longer exists today—in a precise veduta, which appears at the centre of the sheet and is surrounded by a delicate frame of blossoms, tendrils and leaves. Embedded within this frame are four finely bordered medallions depicting views of Biederstein Park and figures from everyday court life: two figures in uniform, a cook and a gardener tending to the flowers. The royal carriage awaits in front of the palace. King Maximilian I Joseph had presented Biederstein to his wife, Karoline of Bavaria, as a country estate. Following his death in 1825, the Queen Dowager commissioned the construction of the new palace, which was built between 1826 and 1830 to designs by Leo von Klenze and served as her widow’s residence and a cherished retreat. The design of the extensive park was also close to Karoline’s heart. With the significant involvement of the eminent landscape architect Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, a picturesque landscape garden was created, the most notable features of which are captured in the medallions on this sheet – including the summerhouse, the waterfall by moonlight and the obelisk. Yet it is not merely the topographically precise views that give this print its special charm: the lush and richly detailed floral ornamentation unfolds with extraordinary delicacy, creating a harmonious fusion of architecture and nature. This demonstrates the exceptional talent of Franz Xaver Nachtmann, who, following his work as a painter of flowers and fruit at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory, was renowned for his virtuoso, meticulous depiction of plants. The royal carriage, the court staff, the garden views and the delicate ornamentation combine to form an idyllic image of the palace grounds. The viewer seems to be whisked away on a journey through the blossoming park – an artfully staged, almost fairy-tale-like vision in which the precise veduta blends with the playful imagination of the artist’s hand. An exceptionally finely executed and rare masterpiece of the Biedermeier period. | 1799 Obermais - München 1846 | 19.
