Vier antieke meetlinten – Chesterman Sheffield – Messing

Four antique tape measures – Chesterman Sheffield – Brass, leather and steel – Collectors edition Four special pieces in the history of measuring, where authentic craftsmanship, beautifully patinated brass and more than a century of technical development come together! This characterful collection consists of four different historical tape measures, each with its own construction, appearance and mechanism. From an impressive open measuring tape with a turned wooden handle to compact, leather-covered examples with brass fittings. Together they form a striking decorative ensemble that immediately evokes the workshops, building sites and land surveying instruments of yesteryear. An attractive lot for collectors of old tools, industrial antiques and historical measuring instruments. Historical background The development of retractable measuring tapes received a significant boost in the 19th century from manufacturers such as James Chesterman of Sheffield, England. Chesterman became renowned for his patented retracting mechanisms and the further development of metal measuring tapes. Sheffield grew during this period into an important centre for the production of high-quality measuring instruments and precision tools. One of the offered specimens still clearly bears the historical markings CHESTERMAN, SHEFFIELD and ENGLAND. The collection consists of four specimens: 1. Open tape measure with wooden handle A robust measuring instrument with a large rolled-up metal tape, brass-colored construction and a beautifully turned wooden handle. The visible retraction mechanism, the old patina and the mechanical design make this a particularly decorative tool. The mechanism also bears the inscription PATENT. 2. Large round tape measure with leather cover A sturdy round specimen with a dark brown covered housing, metal rim, brass fittings and a central retracting feature. The well-worn exterior gives this instrument a beautiful authentic look. 3. Small tape measure – 3 meters Compact historical tape measure with leather housing and brass plate, bearing the inscription 3M. This specimen is in clearly well-used condition. The housing is torn and the protruding end fittings show damage and deformation. 4. Chesterman – Sheffield, England – 50 meters A handsome historical English tape measure with a round, dark brown housing and brass retraction mechanism. The housing bears the inscriptions: CHESTERMAN – SHEFFIELD – ENGLAND On the brass middle piece the marking 50m is clearly visible. An interesting collectible from a historical English measuring instrument manufacturer.
