A cohesive lot of four early volumes of the expressionist book series “Die Silbergäule,” published in 1919 and 1920 by Paul Steegemann Verlag in Hannover. The series is among the characteristic literary publication projects of German Expressionism, Dadaism, and the early avant-garde. In addition to expressionist authors, later the series also included significant Dadaist publications. Contents: Victor Curt Habicht: Echnaton. Novella. Hannover, Paul Steegemann Verlag, 1919. Die Silbergäule, Volumes 5–7. Illustrated original softcover. The exact pagination is taken from the depicted title page or the colophon. Max Krell: Das Meer. Narrative. Hannover, Paul Steegemann Verlag, 1919. Die Silbergäule, Volumes 27–28. Illustrated original softcover with a cover illustration by Ernst Schütte. First edition. Olaf [pseudonym of Carl Maria Weber]: Der bekränzte Silen. Verse from a comforting shore. Cover title: “Verse des antiken Eros.” Hannover, Paul Steegemann Verlag, 1919. Die Silbergäule, Volumes 34–35. Illustrated original softcover. First edition of the author’s first independent publication. Robert Brendel: Die große Hure. Erotic novella. Hannover, Paul Steegemann Verlag, 1920. Die Silbergäule, Volumes 57–58. Illustrated original softcover. First edition. Four original early issues of the series with their characteristic typographic and illustrative bindings. Particularly appealing as a closed collection on German literature, book design, and publishing history of the Expressionist era. Condition: signs of age and use. The delicate original softcovers have browned, are partly stained, rubbed, and have edges, corners, and spines worn to varying degrees or with small tears. Paper browned with age. Additional specific flaws, ownership marks, or loose gatherings are shown in the detail photos. The photographs are part of the condition description.
