Very powerful ancient Wè / Kran-Guéré mask – tubular eyes...

Very powerful anthropomorphic mask attributed to the Wè / Kran-Guéré traditions of western Côte d'Ivoire, a border artistic region with Liberia. This work immediately stands out for its sculptural architecture of exceptional presence: a broad, bulging forehead forming a visor, two cylindrical eyes deeply carved and strongly projected, a powerful vertical nasal axis, and a monumental mouth treated in successive volumes. The composition is spectacular both frontally and in profile. It rests on a remarkable opposition between the massive curves of the forehead and chin and the almost architectural construction of the facial planes. The two tubular eyes, outlined by brownish-red tones, give the mask an extraordinarily intense expression and constitute one of the most characteristic plastic elements of the Wè/Kran sculptural traditions in this region. The sculpture retains a dark patina nuanced from deep brown to black, punctuated by lighter areas gradually revealing the wood material. On the most exposed reliefs, the surface shows chromatic variations and wear that particularly accentuate the modeling: the edge of the nose, the contour of the eyes, the lips and peripheral volumes. The interior is deeply hollowed out. It reveals a surface far rougher than the exterior, with tool marks and clearings that are particularly interesting to examine, as well as the openings corresponding to the eyes. Numerous ancient perforations around the edges testify to the fixation system formerly associated with the full presentation of the mask—ties, textile elements or fibers depending on the intended use. Several public collections conserve Wè masks presenting this combination of prominently raised forehead, cylindrical eyes, and deliberately non-naturalistic expression. The National Museum of African Art in Washington describes these characteristics as particularly representative of Wè aesthetics. The piece possesses, above all, a quality that photographs make especially perceptible: a remarkable sculptural presence. The face changes radically with the viewing angle. Frontal, it appears extremely graphic and almost abstract; in three-quarter view, the depth of the eyes, nose, and mouth transforms the mask into a true construction of volumes. This freedom in assembling planes and projections is precisely one of the reasons why Wè/Guéré creations have held an important place in the history of Western gaze on African arts. Sotheby’s describes Guéré-Wobé art as characterized by anthropomorphic faces constructed in volumes and unexpected planes and by a great diversity of sculptural invention. A particularly expressive collectible piece, remarkable as much for its architecture as for the richness of its surface and the power of its expression. Condition Good overall condition given its age and the nature of the object. Visible traces of use, abrasions, patina variations, minor accidents and older cracks, notably around certain perforations. These particularities are intentionally preserved and clearly visible in the detailed photographs. No significant restoration can be affirmed based solely on the photographs. The interior preserves numerous traces of shaping and wear.
