Varnhagen - Schriften, 9 Bände

Varnhagen von Ense, K. A. Denkwürdigkeiten und vermischte Schriften. 9 Bde. Mannheim, Hoff u. Leipzig, Brockhaus 1837-59. Kl.-8° u. 8°. Schwarze Pp.-Bde. d. Varnhagen von Ense, KA Memoirs and Miscellaneous Writings. 9 vols. Mannheim, Hoff and Leipzig, Brockhaus 1837-59. Small octavo and octavo. Contemporary black paper bindings with gilt spine titles or red spine labels (somewhat rubbed and bumped, front covers partly with inventory labels). Goedeke VI, 180, 37 (with detailed table of contents).- First edition.- Karl August Varnhagen von Ense had played a not insignificant role in the romantic Berlin scene before the Napoleonic Wars; later, as a journalist and diplomat, he was so influential that Metternich demanded his dismissal from the Prussian government in 1819. His biographical works remain of interest for understanding his time. Rarely are they so complete; volumes 8 and 9, published posthumously, are usually missing. Somewhat (occasionally more heavily) foxed and slightly browned in places. Volumes 1-6 come from the library of the Counts Schönborn-Buchheim, bearing their characteristic label on the front covers and bookplates on the endpapers; volumes 7-9 come from the library of Baron von Stockmar, bearing his bookplate and signature on the flyleaf and endpapers.
