Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858), Woodcut on Paper, Under Eitai Bridge

Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The composition, titled Under Eitai Bridge features a dramatic low-angle perspective from beneath the massive wooden beams and pilings of the Eitai Bridge. The view looks out across the water toward a harbor where several traditional cargo ships are moored in the distance. A smaller vessel with two bright red banners is positioned in the foreground. The title and series name are contained within a cartouche shaped like an open book at the top center. A circular censor seal is visible on the bridge pillar at the far left. The reverse of the mounting paper includes a handwritten artist attribution and a historical price label. Sight size: 6.5"W x 9"H.
