Undated (1851) Pattern Annular, or Ring-Form Cent. Judd-131a Restrike

Undated (1851) Pattern Annular, or Ring-Form Cent. Judd-131a Restrike, Pollock-156. Rarity-7. Nickel. Reeded Edge. Proof-67 (PCGS). 44.8 grains. PCGS has mounted this coin backwards in the holder. Obv: This is one of the unperforated restrikes of this cent pattern, without a large central hole. At the top is the denomination CENT with the inscription ONE TENTH SILVER curving around the bottom. The only other ornamentation is a plain raised ring below the lettering and near the raised lip that would border the inner hole. Rev: An open laurel wreath with no fruit around where the central perforation would be, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the border. A delicately toned Superb Gem with light striations evident in the fields on each side. Original strikings from these dies (Judd-127) with central perforation are experimental pieces made as an attempt to replace the large cents then in circulation, and a continuation of an effort begun in 1850. It was thought that a coin with some precious metal like silver might be small enough - yet valuable enough - to circulate in place of the heavy copper cents. The perforation made these planchets difficult to consistently manufacture, however, and these were not adopted, but notice the fact that the size of the present pattern coin is similar in diameter to that of the regular issue Flying Eagle cents adopted later. Sometimes incremental steps must be taken, and this is one of the earliest toward the regular issue small cent still in use today. Provenance: From our (Bowers and Merena's) Abe Kosoff Estate sale, November 1985, lot 1012; Heritage's sale of Important Selections from the Bob R. Simpson Collection, Part I, September 2020, lot 10175; Heritage's sale of Selections from the Burge Collection, February 2025 Long Beach Signature Auction, lot 3603. PCGS Population: 1; 0 finer. PCGS# 11560. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
