Undated (1835-1837) Christopher Bechtler $1. K-3. Rarity-6. 28.G.

Seldom Offered Kagin-3 Bechtler Gold Dollar Undated (1835-1837) Christopher Bechtler $1. K-3. Rarity-6. 28.G. Centered, No Star. Reeded Edge. AU-55 (PCGS). An elusive variety, this is the first example of the C. Bechtler K-3 gold dollar that we have offered in nearly a decade. Attractive Choice AU preservation for a Christopher Bechtler gold dollar irrespective of variety, both sides are dressed in deep olive-gold color with enhancing highlights of iridescent pinkish-rose. The strike is well centered and bold on both sides. Accuracy compels us to mention several wispy pin scratches in the expansive field areas on both sides, but the in-hand appearance is pleasingly smooth in the absence of sizeable marks. Christopher Bechtler and his son Augustus and nephew Christopher, Jr. operated their own private mint in Rutherfordton, North Carolina from 1830 to 1852. The coins were struck at two sites: at their home in Rutherfordton and near their mine just north of town. Originally housed at the American Numismatic Society Museum, the coin press and several of the dies are currently on display at the Bechtler House Museum in Rutherfordton. The family was among the earliest private minters servicing the nation's first major gold rush in the Piedmont region of North Carolina and Georgia. Kagin-3, offered here, is one of Christopher Bechtler, Sr.'s rarer gold dollars and is seen far less often than the popular N Reversed variety (K-4). This offering represents an excellent opportunity for advanced territorial gold type collectors and Bechtler coin specialists. PCGS Population: 3; 9 finer, just two of which are Mint State (both MS-61). PCGS# 10058. NGC ID: 2B96. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
