Umayyad Caliphate. Marwan II (744-750 AD). Wasit mint. Dirham (Silver, 28.1 mm, 2.87 g). Obv: لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له / بسم الله ضرب هذا الدرهم بـ[دار الضرب] سنة [التاريخ]. “There is no god but Allah alone; He has no partner / In the name of Allah, this dirham was struck at [mint] in the year [date].” Rev: الله أحد الله الصمد لم يلد ولم يولد ولم يكن له كفوا أحد / محمد رسول الله أرسله بالهدى ودين الحق ليظهره على الدين كله ولو كره المشركون. “Allah is One, Allah is the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is begotten, and there is none comparable to Him / Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. He sent him with guidance and the true religion to make it prevail over all religions, even though the polytheists abhor it.” Reference: Album, Checklist of Islamic Coins, 142. Marwan II ibn Muhammad was the last Umayyad caliph before the Abbasid overthrow in 750 AD. His reign was marked by internal rebellions and the growing Abbasid movement in the eastern provinces. This dirham from Wasit continues the inscriptional tradition established under Abd al-Malik, bearing religious declarations rather than the ruler’s name. It belongs to the final years of Umayyad rule, before the dynasty’s defeat and the transfer of power to the Abbasids.
