TWO GEORGE III MOURNING RINGS, CIRCA 1800

TWO GEORGE III MOURNING RINGS CIRCA 1800 The first with a curved glazed panel over a blue enamelled ground with the initials HB, within a black and white enamelled surround, inscribed Henry Biggs. OB 31 Mar. 1800 Æ 77., unmarked; together with a black enamelled band ring, inscribed Henry Biggs. OB: 31. Mar: 1800 Æ: 77, stamped with MG maker's mark and London 1799 hallmark Size/dimensions: first ring size L ½; second approximately L-M Gross weight: 6.3 grams This lot relates to the Bond family of Tyneham, including Tyneham House and nearby Creech Grange, Steeple, Dorset. Both estates had been in the family since the 1680s, when Nathaniel Bond (1634-1707) acquired them. He later purchased Holme Priory, East Holme, in 1690. Tyneham House subsequently passed to Nathaniel's second son, John Bond (1678-1744, Lot 16). An English lawyer and Member of Parliament for Corfe Castle, he married his first cousin, Margaret Williams (d. 1775, aged 87), and together they had four sons and two daughters. Their first-born son, also named John Bond (1717-1784, Lot 12), inherited the Tyneham estate from his father in 1744 and Creech Grange from his uncle Denis in 1747, following his death without a male heir. Like his father, John served as MP for Corfe Castle. On 17 July 1749, he married Mary Dummer (Lots 13 and 15), daughter of Edmund Dummer of Swaythling and stepdaughter of his uncle Denis. The couple had five sons and two daughters. John's third surviving son, Thomas Bond, who managed the Tyneham estate, married Sarah Newsham in 1779. Sarah's mother was Eliza Newsham (Lot 11). His fourth surviving son, the Reverend William Bond (1757-1852), married Jane Biggs in 1794. Jane was the daughter of Henry Biggs (Lot 14) of Stockton House. The Sampson & Mordan propelling pencil (Lot 17) relates to a later chapter in the Bond family story. Their house, Moigne Combe, was built in 1900 for Henry Pomeroy Bond and became the family's principal residence after they were forced to leave Tyneham in 1943 when the surrounding land was reclaimed for military use. The Elizabethan intelligence agent John Bond (1555-1631), father of Nathaniel Bond, is said to have earned the family motto Non Sufficit Orbis ("The World Is Not Enough"). Both the Bond surname and the motto were later used by Ian Fleming in his James Bond novels. Fleming would likely have been familiar with the Bond family's importance in Dorset, having attended Durnford Preparatory School at Langton Matravers, close to the family's extensive estates and former seats Condition Report: First ring with some nicks and nibbles to the glazed panel some general wear commensurate with age and use. The second ring has noticeable losses to the enamel and the ring is misshapen- slightly oval from knocks Condition Report Disclaimer, TWO GEORGE III MOURNING RINGS, TWO GEORGE III MOURNING RINGS CIRCA 1800 The first with a curved glazed panel over a blue enamelled ground with the initials HB, within a black and white enamelled surround, inscribed Henry Biggs.
