Travel icon - Brass - Brass travel icon

Messing travel icon – richly detailed triptych with Mary and Christ A small devotional object with an impressive wealth of details. This brass travel icon opens as a triptych and reveals a central Marian vision, surrounded by religious scenes in relief. The warm brass tone and dark accents in the levels make the figures and ornaments stand out beautifully. Central is Mary with raised hands, with the Christ Child in a medallion before her chest. This representation corresponds to the Orthodox icon type 'Theotokos of the Sign'. The two side shutters each contain two separate religious scenes. An elegant coronation with additional figures completes the whole. Travel icons belong to the tradition of personal faith experience: due to their compact size and folding shutters they could be carried and opened along the way for prayer and contemplation. This specimen aligns with that Orthodox tradition in its form and imagery. A special collectible for lovers of icons, religious art and brass miniatures. Even opened in a display cabinet, the many relief details come into their own. Features • Brass travel icon in triptych form. • Central panel with Mary and Christ. • Two hinged side shutters with religious scenes. • Elaborate crown with additional figures. • Geometric framing and relief markings. • Warm brass color with local dark patina. • Maker, exact dating and country of manufacture unknown. Condition Used condition with visible signs of use and age. The brass shows superficial wear, small scratches, color differences and dark buildup in the recessed parts. The reliefs have locally faded details. Along the edges and at the hinge points there are irregularities visible. Please look carefully at the photos for details, signs of use and condition; these are part of the description. A atmospheric triptych in which religious symbolism and decorative metalwork come together.
