Tokuriki Tomikichirō, Garden of Kokedera, woodblock print, Uchida, Kyoto Description Hand-printed polychrome Japanese woodblock (mokuhan) by Tokuriki Tomikichirō (德力富吉郎, 1902 to 2000), one of the best-known printmakers of the 20th-century Kyoto school. Title: Garden of Kokedera (洛西苔寺庭), the garden of Saihō-ji in western Kyoto. Series: Kyōraku sanjūdai (京洛三十題), Thirty Views of Kyoto. Publisher: Uchida Bijutsu Shoshi, Kyoto. Technique: hand-printed colour woodblock, shin-hanga style. This is a woodblock print, not a wood engraving. Format: shikishi card, approximately 27 x 24 cm. Signature: brush-written title and signature in the image, with an artist seal. Dating: the design belongs to the 1936 series. This impression is a later Uchida printing, 1975 (Shōwa period). Condition: good condition for age. Deckle edges. A pencil notation on the reverse from a previous owner or dealer. What the print shows Kokedera is the popular name for Saihō-ji, a Rinzai Zen temple in the western hills of Kyoto. The name means moss temple. Its garden holds more than a hundred varieties of moss that carpet the grounds around a central pond shaped like the character for heart. The garden dates in its present form to the 14th century and the work of the monk Musō Soseki. Access today is by advance request only, with visitors joining a sutra-copying or chanting session before entering, which has kept the garden quiet and rare to see. Tokuriki builds the scene in layered colour. Soft green mounds carry the modelled texture of the mossed garden. A pale mountain rises behind under a graded blue sky. Flowering and budding branches cross the foreground, red berries or blossom on the right, pink blossom on the left, placing the scene in spring. Fine gradation (bokashi) in the sky and slopes and a shimmer of mica in the greens give the print its depth. The style stays in Tokuriki's register of quiet Kyoto places rendered in broad, clean colour.
