Toegeschreven aan Gustave Bayol - Statue

Very decorative and authentic antique French fairground ornament (Art Forain) in the shape of a pig, dating from circa 1890-1910. The figure shows all specific, sought-after features that point to the craftsmanship from the famous ateliers of Angers, notably the circle of Gustave Bayol. It has probably stood as a decorative piece on a fairground ride. The pig is traditionally constructed from solid West European wood (probably beech). Very characteristic of authentic fairground art are the clearly visible, straight joint lines where the solidly carved legs are mounted to the central body (see photos). The wood, due to its great age, is completely dry and weighs about 4 kg. Under the matte top layer is the original, characteristic pink gesso layer on a lime base, applied and visible here and there (see photos). This pink primer layer (based on lime and animal binding agent, usually rabbit) was mixed with red paint so that, when the paint was damaged, a pink ground layer rather than white would show. This was not particularly noticeable. The pig features a deeply incised saddle cloth with vertical and horizontal strap bands, decorated with striking two-tone egg-shaped rosettes above the legs. The head has a beautiful, theatrical expression with the typical large, expressive “people’s eyes.” The tail is a later (historical) inserted curled iron tail, the classic method to prevent breakage on the fair. The piece is in good, structurally sound condition with logical and decorative signs of use fitting for an antique fair attraction (see photos). There are no major active cracks from drying, only slight cracks visible at the attachment of the legs to the body in two places (see photos). It makes an exceptionally decorative piece that would be a very special item in any interior and certainly a conversation starter! The piece will be carefully packed and insured for shipment.
