A Veritable Trophy from Martha's Vineyard Tisbury, Massachusetts. $5 1929 Ty. 2. Fr. 1800-2. Martha's Vineyard NB. Charter #1274. PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58. Serial Number 4. Synonymous with wealth and affluence, Martha's Vineyard and Tisbury are nonetheless tough prospects for numismatic items. Yet thanks to the Martha's Vineyard National Bank of Tisbury (Charter# 1274) which had organized in 1865 collectors have for their consideration a total of 43 notes recorded by the National Bank Note Census. That figure though does consider a sizable number of T1 Nationals issued under the Series of 1929, but this note does represent something that has managed to evade some of the most accomplished collectors of Bay State Nationals. Emblazoned horizontally at left and right, one may observe "1274" overprinted twice in brown effectively betraying this note as a T2 National issued during the 1930s. To that end, bidders may also notice a single-digit serial number which reads "A000004" emphasizing that this note can trace its history to the first sheet of T2 $5s issued by this bank while providing collectors the opportunity to acquire the only known example of this type and denomination for themselves on this affluent enclave frequented by the rich and famous. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
