TIMO HOGAN Pitjantjatjara language, born 1973 Lake Baker, 2020 acrylic on linen 85 x 110 cm bears inscription verso: SAP20-122, Timo Hogan, Spinifex Arts Project, 2020 PROVENANCE Spinifex Arts Project, Western Australia, Cat No. 20-122 Private Collection, Northern Territory Accompanied by a copy of certificate of authenticity from Spinifex Arts Project Timo Hogan paints the story, and the story is the big picture. In Lake Baker, he brings into focus the ancient Tjukurpa embedded within Country, depicting a landscape he knows intimately and for which he holds cultural responsibility. Born in Kalgoorlie in 1973, Hogan is a Pitjantjatjara artist based at Tjuntjuntjara in Western Australia. Introduced to his ancestral Country and its cultural law by his father, Neville McArthur, Hogan began painting Lake Baker in 2004. After a decade-long break, he returned to painting with renewed commitment to recording the stories of this powerful salt lake. In 2021, his work received the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. Here, Hogan depicts the Wati Kutjara Tjukurpa (Two Men Creation Line), with the Two Men watching over the lake as the powerful Wanampi (water serpent) emerges from his kapi ngura (home in the rock hole). These ancestral beings shaped the landscape, leaving enduring traces of their presence and establishing the law, ceremony and song that continue to give Country its meaning. Through a restrained palette and expansive composition, Hogan reveals a landscape alive with ancestral power. Lake Baker is both a depiction of place and a record of cultural inheritance, affirming the enduring connection between Country, creation and custodianship. © TIMO HOGAN / Copyright Agency, 2026
