THOR JEAN GAUDAIRE - Untitled (2014-2018)

Descriptio Mixed media on canvas. Dimensions: 107 × 92 cm. This abstract and expressionist work presents a dynamic composition of biomorphic forms, graphic signs, and figurative elements, distributed on a grayish background with an irregular texture. The painted surface is articulated through a combination of chromatic patches, gestural strokes, and black lines of varying thicknesses, creating a complex visual network. In the upper left, an organic form with sinuous contours in shades of green and turquoise stands out, accompanied by dotted lines and calligraphic elements, while in the upper right, a small, schematic white figure with an anthropomorphic appearance appears. In the center, a large green area is traversed by dark strokes and small white dots, establishing a strong contrast with the black forms and the blue and violet interventions in the lower part. A bluish rectangular structure containing a stylized white figure is particularly noteworthy, alongside pink surfaces decorated with abstract signs and motifs. The composition combines references to spontaneous drawing, graffiti, and gestural abstraction, creating a playful, symbolic, and narrative visual universe. The superimposition of paint layers, the diversity of textures, and the coexistence of seemingly unrelated elements lend the work a remarkable expressive vitality. Its artistic language shows affinities with certain creations by Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), especially in the use of schematic signs, figures with a primitive appearance, and a spontaneous gestural style akin to urban art, as well as with the artistic universe of Joan Miró (1893-1983), due to the use of biomorphic forms, symbols with a fantastical appearance, and a poetic conception of pictorial space. Parallels can also be drawn with the work of Keith Haring (1958-1990), due to the simplification of figures, the prominence of line drawing, and the dynamic nature of his compositions. These references indicate stylistic affinities and do not imply authorship. The work bears initials and is dated in the lower left corner, with the inscriptions 18.12.14 and 10.02.18, corresponding to the years 2014 and 2018. Provenance: private collection, Padua, Italy.
