Born in Bern, Switzerland, he studied at the Schule für Gestaltung in Zürich before moving to Paris in the 1980s. His work challenges conventional ideas of art, politics, consumerism and social responsibility. Hirschhorn frequently employs inexpensive, everyday materials, including cardboard, aluminium foil, plastic sheeting, packing tape, photocopied images and printed texts. These materials are deliberately rough and makeshift, creating an aesthetic that rejects the polished finish traditionally associated with fine art. His installations often incorporate vast quantities of visual information, combining philosophical references, popular culture, political imagery and documentary material into complex, immersive environments. Central to Hirschhorn’s practice is the belief that art should engage directly with the world rather than remain confined to galleries and museums. His large-scale projects, including Gramsci Monument (2013), explore political philosophy and seek to establish temporary spaces for public discussion and participation. He has also produced numerous works referencing philosophers and thinkers such as Antonio Gramsci, Georges Bataille and Baruch Spinoza. Hirschhorn’s art is intentionally confrontational, questioning authority, inequality and the relationship between intellectual thought and everyday life. Through its accumulation of materials and ideas, his work challenges viewers to reconsider their assumptions about contemporary society and the role of art within it. His Relief Abstrait works extend this approach into abstract compositions, combining everyday materials, tape, cardboard and other found elements into layered, relief-like structures. Balancing abstraction with material roughness, these works challenge traditional distinctions between painting, sculpture and collage, reflecting Hirschhorn’s interest in immediacy, accessibility and the physical presence of art.
