The Fall of Pompeii Joseph Emanuel Weiser

Joseph Emanuel Weiser was born in Munich. He studied art at the Munich Academy under the tutelage of Wilhelm von Diez. The artist undertook numerous study trips through Germany, Austria and Italy before settling in Munich. Weiser’s artistic output was extensive and varied. He painted still lifes, portraits, genre scenes, historical paintings, landscapes, as well as works featuring biblical and mythological iconography. The motif of the ‘Last Day of Pompeii’ is a copy of the enthusiasm for antiquity that was so pronounced in the 19th century, which was sustained by the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum. For Joseph Emanuel Weiser, the ancient subject offered the opportunity to combine his interest in history, costume and detailed depictions of social settings. In his historical and genre paintings, Weiser combined the vivid reconstruction of past ways of life with a lively, often theatrically staged arrangement of figures. The Pompeii theme also allowed him to contrast the splendour of ancient life with the dramatic notion of imminent doom. As such, this composition fits characteristically within the historicist painting of antiquity of the late 19th century. | 1847 Patschkau – München 1911 | 19.
