Telegraph - G

An antique Italian mechanical device intended for marking and securing checks, signed G. Cerutti, Vic. Serpenti 5, Rome, probably manufactured around 1920–1935. The device features a fine solid brass construction combined with a black metal frame, with a large rotating dial displaying numbers and monetary symbols. This type of machine, also called a check engraver, check protector, check writer or check protector, was used in banks, shops and administrations to inscribe the amounts on checks to prevent forgeries. Its internal mechanism, visible on the reverse, testifies to robust and precise manufacture typical of professional devices from the early 20th century.
