Toutes les enchères / Art Ancien / Tatsuzo Shimaoka (島岡達三, 1919–2007) - Vase - Stoneware - No customs

Ceramic vase by Tatsuzo Shimaoka — Living National Treasure — Jōmon decoration From the collection of Mr. D, Europe. Shipped from Europe: no customs fees for EU bidders. Rare on the European market. A rectangular ceramic vase with a short, slightly flared neck, made by Tatsuzo Shimaoka in Mashiko. The flat body with rounded corners is entirely covered in relief decoration using the jōmon-zogan technique: dense, regular rope impressions cover all faces, forming a tight network of cream-white patterns on a rust-brown ground. The beige-brown glaze reveals the clay body in places, underscoring the direct, mineral character of the piece. Signed. Dimensions Height: 22 cm — Width: 13.5 cm — Depth: 7.5 cm Tatsuzo Shimaoka (1919–2007) A Japanese ceramist trained under Shoji Hamada in Mashiko, one of the founders of the mingei movement. He developed a personal body of work based on the jōmon-zogan technique — inlay of rope motifs in clay, drawn from Japan’s Neolithic traditions —, which he associates with Mashiko’s natural glazes. Designated a Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuhō) in 1996. His works are held in numerous international public collections.
