[20], 786, [30] pp., with the final blank. 12.5cm x 8cm. 12mo (signatures *¹⁰ A–Ll¹²). Willems 415. Publius Cornelius Tacitus, known as Tacitus (c.AD 56 – c.120), was a Roman historian and politician. Tacitus is widely regarded as one of the greatest Roman historians by modern scholars. This is the complete works of Rome's greatest historian in a book you could carry in a coat pocket. 1629 the Elzevirs of Leiden launched their famous series of small-format Latin classics: Accurate texts, engraved titles, narrow margins and a distinctive typeface cut by Christoffel van Dijck. The text is that of Justus Lipsius, the great Flemish scholar whose edition of Tacitus (first published by Plantin in 1574) set the standard for classical scholarship. The imprint "Lugduni Batavorum" means "Leiden of the Batavians." In his Histories, Tacitus tells the story of the Batavian revolt against Rome, led by Julius Civilis. The Dutch saw the Batavians as their ancestors and the revolt as an early version of their own revolt against Spain.
