Leewenberg (Dated 1703) “Carnival Kermesse (Tafereel van de Belacchende Werelt)” TECHNICAL SHEET Period: 1703 (Early 18th century) School: Dutch / Flemish Artist: Signed T.P. Leewenberg (lower left) Contemporary period derivation after Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne (The Carnival ) Medium: Oil on canvas Canvas Dimensions: 58 x 69.5 cm Dimensions with Frame: 64.5 x 76.5 cm Condition: Excellent historical condition, with a fine, natural, and uniform period craquelure. Leewenberg), depicts a rare and extraordinary winter carnival parade set in a Flemish village, characterized by snow-covered roofs and bare trees. The work captures the chaotic, allegorical, and deeply satirical energy of popular kermesses. The composition is directly inspired by the famous iconographic inventions of Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne (1589–1662), a celebrated master of the Dutch Golden Age known for his sharp social satire and the Tafereel van de Belacchende Werelt (“Scene of the Ridiculous World”) cycle. A theatrical and grotesque iconography of exceptional richness: Center: A man carries on his shoulders a musician playing the flute while wearing a bizarre metal cage-helmet. Surreal Masks: Figures parade encased in wooden barrels, characters with upturned buckets on their heads, and peasants adorned with strange jewelry and ladles. Social Contrast: On the left, an elegant bourgeois couple observes the procession with amused moral disapproval, creating the typical social juxtaposition beloved in Northern European genre painting. ARTISTIC CONTEXT AND COLLECTOR VALUE Executed in 1703, the canvas demonstrates the extraordinary vitality and continued demand for "Bruegelian" and satirical subjects at the dawn of the 18th century. The artist, T.P. Leewenberg, reinterprets the 17th-century prototypes of van de Venne, Teniers, and Brakenburgh with a warm chromatic sensitivity, soft brushwork, and a very pleasing luminous rendering. Why add this painting to your collection: Signature and Certain Date (1703): The presence of the autograph signature T.P. Leewenberg and the date 1703 guarantees incontestable historical and documentary anchoring. Rare and Narrative Subject: Unlike classic tavern scenes or brawls, the anthropological richness of the historical masks makes this painting a piece of great collector interest and a guaranteed conversation starter. Excellent Display Size: A perfect easel format (approx. 60x70 cm), easy to place in both historical homes and modern, eclectic interiors. Condition and Authenticity: The canvas retains its original patina with a splendid network of coeval craquelureclearly visible on the front, while the stretcher and rear support confirm the period and genuineness of the object.
