Excessively Rare Proof Half Dollar from Hong Kong (t) HONG KONG (SAR). 50 Cents, 1868. Hong Kong Mint. Victoria. PCGS PROOF-50. KM-8; Prid-Unlisted. An INCREDIBLY RARE type that Pridmore does not list, noting that "...several reports claim that a half dollar dated 1868 exists, but such a coin has not been traced," this wonderful specimen exhibits a proof nature, though some obvious subtle circulation is noted. Pleasingly toned and with an exceptionally wholesome aspect, this minor is happily without issue, and no doubt stands as an immense opportunity for the specialist and connoisseur of the Hong Kong series. Just two other specimens are observed in the marketplace and outside of museum collections--an NGC PROOF-61 that we sold in our December 2015 Hong Kong Auction (Lot # 61063) for a hammer of $75,000, and the Irving Goodman example--a PCGS PROOF-66 that amassed the colossal total of $109,250 in May 1995. Given the extreme paucity in specimen available, the amount of enthusiasm for the present minor should be rather staggering. Estimate: $50,000 - $60,000.
