Thirteen years before Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress (1678), the Anglican clergyman Symon Patrick published his own allegory of the Christian life as a pilgrimage, The Parable of the Pilgrim (1665). It was a bestseller, passing through six editions within a decade, and even the libertine poet the Earl of Rochester took notice of it. The Morgan Library catalogues its copy as a “Bunyan source book,” Patrick’s pilgrim is a moderate Anglican, and the book laments that his age regarded moderation as a sin and “furious and headlong zeal” as a virtue. It defends the restored Church of England after the upheavals of the Civil War. Which is why it is scarcely known today. His politics and vision of the Church became quickly outdated. Symon Patrick (1626–1707) was rector of St Paul’s, Covent Garden, where he won his parishioners’ admiration by staying at his post through the Great Plague of 1665, the same year this book was first published. He later became Bishop of Chichester and then of Ely. J. H. Shorthouse, whose bookplate and signature both appear in this book, was an English novelist (1834-1903), influenced by Ruskin and Pre-Raphaelitism, author of the influential 'John Inglesant' among other works. he was also a a prolific 'book plater.' His bookplate appears in numerous bookseller's catalogues. He wrote the bestselling novel John Inglesant (1881), set in exactly this period of 17th-century English religion: Little Gidding, the Civil War, and Anglican, Catholic and Puritan conflict. A copy of a Restoration Anglican devotional allegory from his library is the kind of book he read while researching that world. His signature and bookplate are both here. PATRICK, SIMON (Symon) (1626–1707) was Bishop of Ely. Prior to that, he had been Rector of St Pauls, Covent Garden, and won the admiration of his parishioner's for remaining there during the plague years. He was a polemicist, whose chief works were protecting the Church of England against Papists. [16], 184, 183-214, 217-527, [1] pp Text continuous despite pagination. Conforms to ESTC R23052
