Status Quo – The Early Works (Essential! Records – ESBLP136) made in UK 1990 5x LP compilation Box-Set | Box-Set, LP's (5) + Booklet: NM (as new!) 5 LP set housed in a cardboard box sleeve with a 10 page booklet with photos and tracklisting. | item is not sealed, but in NEW condition, unplayed. Status Quo's early archival: the 5-CD box sets The Early Years capture the fascinating, transitional evolution of the band from a whimsical, psychedelic pop outfit into the iconic, heads-down boogie-rock behemoth they became. Musical Evolution & HighlightsThe Psychedelic Roots (1966–1969): Their early work—encompassing iterations as The Spectres, Traffic Jam, and early Status Quo—was heavily drenched in late-60s psychedelia, featuring swirling organs, fuzz guitars, and eccentric pop sensibilities. The Breakthrough Hit: This era yielded their international psychedelic smash hit "Pictures of Matchstick Men" (1968) alongside gems like "Ice in the Sun".The Transition to Boogie Rock (1970–1972): Albums like Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon and Dog of Two Head marked a pivotal shift. The inclusion of raw BBC sessions and outtakes on these archival releases highlights a band shedding faux-psychedelia for their signature heavy, no-nonsense blues-boogie.Critical ReceptionFor Completists and Historians: Reviewers note that while the deep cuts, mono/stereo mixes, and radio sessions might be repetitive for casual listeners, they serve as an essential, pocket-friendly historical document for dedicated fans.Reappraisal: Critics agree these formative years prove the band was far more inventive, versatile, and willing to push boundaries than their later, formulaic 1970s/80s reputation sometimes implied.Would you like a detailed tracklisting and review of a specific album from this era, such as Picturesque Matchstickable Messages or Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon?
