Meticulous chiseling work on fine Carrara marble. The centaurs are creatures belonging to Greek mythology, half man and half horse. Their peculiarity was to be endowed with reason on the human side, yet at the same time to be slaves of passions on the animal side. They exaggerate the merits and flaws of humankind: from the uncontrollable craving of King Eurystheus to the virtues as tutor/educator of Chiron. From Greece, the figure of the centaur passed into Roman mythology and medieval bestiaries, becoming a frequent subject in European heraldry. In this rare specimen dating to the early decades of the 20th century, the head of the Centaur is replaced by a human skull, to symbolize the transience of time. #testLuca
