This pair of stud earrings features two diamonds in the so-called “Old Mine Cut,” the cushion-shaped diamond cut of the 19th century. Before the modern brilliant cut was calculated in the early 20th century based on modern physics, diamonds had significantly more unique shapes. The cutter was guided by the shape of the rough crystal, and so every antique diamond is truly one of a kind. Together, the two diamonds weigh nearly one carat and have a warm tinted colour. Small inclusions within them bear witness to their natural formation hundreds of millions of years ago. These inclusions do not diminish their brilliance. The diamonds are set in so-called “pinched” settings made of silver on gold. These so-called “collet settings” are masterfully crafted and nestle softly and perfectly against the diamonds. This type of setting was the standard in the mid-19th century for mounting diamonds in high-quality evening jewellery. Platinum or white gold were not yet available to goldsmiths, and the modern prong setting only gradually gained acceptance. The advantage of the collet setting is that it elegantly aligns even slightly differently shaped diamonds: Both stud earrings have the same diameter, even though the diamonds are differently shaped. This can be seen very beautifully, for example, in the famous Sutherland Diamonds at the V&A in London, which are said to date back to Marie Antoinette’s Necklace Affair. The diamonds, with their original antique settings, were originally part of a brooch from middle of the 19th century. We discovered this piece of jewellery as a fragment in Hamburg, and our goldsmiths have transformed the beautiful diamonds in their original settings into stud earrings using gold posts. The practical locking backs have also been newly added and hold securely on the ear.
