Toutes les enchères / Ethnographie / Southern Plains Peyote Stitch Beaded Feather Fan, Turkey Wing Feathers

Native American, Southern Plains, possibly Arapaho, ca. 1950–1975 CE. A feather fan of graduated wild turkey wing feathers, brown with white barring, gathered into a wing-like spray. The feathers are set into a slender handle covered entirely in tiny seed beads in tight gourd stitch (also called peyote stitch), a technique closely associated with Southern Plains beadworkers. The pale blue field is banded in red, cobalt, and white, with small accent motifs at the flared collar. Fluffy plumes dyed red and white fill the join between handle and feathers, and a long fringe of twisted white cord hangs from the butt. Fans like this are carried in dance and in ceremonial settings, including Native American Church meetings, across the Plains. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
