Small Pendant-Brooch in the Shape of a Star, British, c. 1900

Stars are among the great classics of jewelry history. Hardly any other motif comes in so many variations, materials and shapes. Shining stars were particularly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This star, created around c. 1900 and discovered in London, is also a child of this era. Its entire surface is set with 25 softly shimmering natural pearls, giving it a luxurious, soft radiance. But this star is more than just a piece of jewellery - it is a piece of fashion history. On the one hand, stars reflect the fascination with the Orient and the enthusiasm for exotic shapes that characterized European arts and crafts at the time. On the other hand, it was the Empress of Austria, Elisabeth "Sisi", who finally turned the star into an icon. The most famous portrait of the empress by Franz Xaver Winterhalter from 1865 shows her with a multitude of diamond stars in her dark hair. These jewels were specially made by the Viennese court jeweler A. E. Köchert. When the portrait appeared in the press, a veritable star fashion took hold of the ladies of society: anyone who could afford it wanted to own at least one of these sparkling celestial bodies in order to emulate Sisi's elegance. This star shows us that star fashion had lost none of its fascination by c. 1900. It can be worn both as a pendant and as a brooch, combining historical symbolism, timeless beauty and a piece of fashion history.
