Slasky - Lettera d'Amore

In this work, preserved at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, Rotari captures a moment of absolute female autonomy: the protagonist is not portrayed as an object of others’ gaze, but as an active subject of her own sentimental destiny. It is she who takes up the pen, she who chooses the words, she who decides what to entrust to the page. In an era when women had little control over their emotional and social choices, the very act of writing becomes a gesture of personal affirmation. The gaze that lifts toward the observer does not seek confirmation: it is complicity, it is self-awareness. Independence here is not declared, it is enacted: in the confident gesture of the hand, in the relaxed yet masterful posture within the space, in the choice, entirely hers, of what to entrust to the page.
