Toutes les enchères / Arts Graphiques / SIR MUIRHEAD BONE. A group of over one hundred sketches and ...
SIR MUIRHEAD BONE. A group of over one hundred sketches and other works which we believe to be by Bone. There may be others produced by one or other of his two talented sons. However, for the most part these are pencil and sometimes charcoal pictures (or sketches with washes). Some are detailed architectural pieces, others are quickly done landscapes. Perhaps the most effective and numerous are the seascapes, minimalist but precise of, often naval, ships at sea. The vendor has stated that they are by Bone and there are two concrete pieces of evidence: firstly a sketch or two on an envelope addressed to him as 'Sir Muirhead Bone' at an Oxford address, and one brief sketch in heavy pencil or charcoal which he has signed in full and carries an admiralty stamp. There is one wartime (WW1?) sketch of soldiers in a bombarded landscape. Many of these sketches (perhaps especially the naval seascapes) would benefit from framing and display. A fascinating, historically important group. These were purchased by the vendor some years ago and they have been left largely unsorted. We offer them now examined, described as one lot, and sold a/f.
