Antique 800 silver niello pocket watch chain with Saint George protective fob – ca. 1900 – 25 g Definitive Catawiki description A particularly beautiful antique 800 silver pocket watch chain with niello finish and Saint George protective medal/fob, probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The chain, about 40 cm long, is composed of elegant elongated links with dark niello accents, alternated with smaller connecting links. The combination of silver with the dark niello inlay gives the chain its characteristic high-contrast appearance. The chain features a classic lobster clasp and several round spring rings for attaching a pocket watch, key, seal, or fob. Particularly attractive is the applied Saint George protective fob. The round medal is set in a decorative geometric bezel with dark accents and contrasting rounded details. On one side Saint George on horseback is depicted slaying the dragon, surrounded by the Latin inscription: S. GEORGIVS EQVITVM PATRONVS – Saint George, patron saint of riders. The other side corresponds to the traditional depiction of Christ and his disciples in a boat during a storm, with the Latin motto: IN TEMPESTATE SECVRITAS – Safety/protection in the storm. This well-known Saint George motif traces back to historic protective medals from Kremsnitz/Kremnica. Later versions were used, among other things, as lucky and protective amulets, especially connected with travel and seafaring protection.
