Libyan Desert Glass is a rare natural siliceous glass formation formed about 29 million years ago in the Sahara, in the region known as the Great Sand Sea, between Egypt and Libya. This extraordinary material originated when desert quartz sand was subjected to extremely high temperatures, probably following a highly energetic cosmic event, melting and rapidly solidifying into natural glass. The gem presents the typical honey-yellow translucent coloration characteristic of Libyan Desert Glass and may show small natural inclusions and microbubbles formed during the rapid cooling of the fused silica.
