Silver Pendant | Sericho Pallasite Meteorite Slice with Olivine

Sericho (Habaswein) pallasite, Isiolo County, Kenya. A gorgeous slice of a pallasite meteorite set in a sterling silver pendant of rectangular form with convex top and bottom peripheries. Boasting a metallic hue of silver with translucent inclusions in shades of caramel, toffee, and mocha, this shimmering shard of celestial matter is comprised of kamacite, an alloy of iron and nickel that creates the sparkling luster, as well as olivine (also known as peridot) crystal inclusions. Both sides of the slice have been polished to a lustrous finish, then covered with clear glass to be wearable. Hold this pendant up to the sun and watch the light cascade through the open bezel, illuminating the matrix throughout! An "out of this world" adornment that serves as a humbling reminder that we are all made of stardust. Pallasites are the aristocrats of the meteorite world and among the rarest material on Earth: fewer than a hundred and fifty are known, against tens of thousands of ordinary chondrites. They are believed to have formed at the boundary between the molten metal core and the rocky mantle of a differentiated asteroid, where nickel-iron and silicate crystals froze together in a single matrix. The gem-quality olivine suspended in the metal is the same mineral gemologists call peridot. The Sericho mass was found near Habaswein in Isiolo County, Kenya, where local herders had long known the heavy stones scattered across the ground; the field was formally recognized and classified in 2016, and hundreds of kilograms have since been recovered. Sericho olivine runs unusually warm, in ambers and honeyed browns rather than the acid green of Esquel or Imilac, which is exactly the palette visible here.
