[Signed] [First Edition] The Middle Passage: White Ships

The description on the dust jacket flap sums up this award winning book: "The Middle Passage is the name given to one of the most tragic ordeals in history: the cruel and terrifying journey of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean. In this seminal work, master artist Tom Feelings tells the complete story of this horrific diaspora in sixty-four extraordinary narrative paintings. Achingly real, they draw us into the lives of the millions of African men, women, and children who were savagely torn from their beautiful homelands, crowded into disease-ridden "death ships", and transported under nightmarish conditions to the so-called New World An introduction by noted historian Dr. John Henrik Clarke traces the roots of the Atlantic slave trade and gives a vivid summary of its four centuries of brutality." The paintings are primarily in shades of gray, many are double page, measuring 26 by 10". The book is a first edition and both the book and jacket are in fine condition. It is signed on the ffep in silver. Feelings was best known for his children's books, some written in collaboration with his wife Muriel Feelings. He was a recipient of The Newberry and Caldecott awards, and this book was the Coretta Scott King Award winner in 1996. Scholastic recommends the book for 6-8th graders, but it's impact on any age is undeniable.; Oblong Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; not paginated pages; Signed by Author & Illustrator
